Subtopia

Keep the dreams of homeownership alive. As developers, can you bring about the promise of suburban paradise?

Subtopia is a competitive tile flipping game for 1 – 4 players where you play as developers with the same dream of building homogenous suburban paradise.

But what if these combined efforts makes that aspiration impossible?

Players must explore the edges of this land, and then attempt to expand suburbia by colonising over older living space, using the road networks embedded on the tiles to connect the community.

However, in the ruthless competition of the suburban jungle, a perfect connection of tiles is difficult, almost impossible, and only those who profit from its ownership and development will have the means to thrive.

Expand, Invest, Transform, and play a realistic experience simulating homogenous suburban expansion.

Living the Dream

"Get the perfect home for your family and car! Own your own dream forever home, with contemporary design, spacious living in a prime location. Get the best value, and book your own private tour now.”

Simulate Suburb Reproduction

Simulate the gentrification of land, transforming it into modern suburbs. Strategically utilise the road networks available to drive the rules of expansion and make new developments.

One People // Divided Whole

We are all one interconnected people, yet we live as if divided. Suburbs are often built in pieces that don’t make something whole. All the tiles of this town can connect. Can you connect them all?

Working as one

You can play this game as a giant jigsaw puzzle. Either with yourself or others. Try to connect the town's road networks together perfectly! This starts off simple but gets more difficult as more tiles get added.

Your Turn

Spend your action to flip a rural tile face up, transforming it into Suburbs!

Rotate the tile so that it connects with another suburb. If two or more suburbs connect, you explore, placing down new Rural tiles.

This is the first time you connected tiles this turn. Take another action afterwards.

Subtopia is a surreal strategy board game set in a suburban dreamscape where everyday neighborhoods unravel into cosmic enigmas. Players navigate suburban grids that morph into constellations, factories, and realms beyond reality. It's Monopoly meets Blade Runner meets Tarot.

Players take turns flipping tiles on a modular board representing suburban neighborhoods. Each tile reveals either utopian homes or dystopian industry. Power cards (like The Magician or The Zoning Enforcer) shift the landscape. Strategy, luck, and the occasional dice roll from the cosmos determine your fate.

Subtopia fuses narrative storytelling, social commentary on urban sprawl and imperialism, and a high-concept visual universe—think cosmic Tarot meets zoning maps. It's part game, part art piece, part critique of modern life.

The visual direction draws inspiration from 19th-century engravings, cyberpunk aesthetics, tarot symbolism, and cosmic surrealism. Art direction leans on styles similar to the Flammarion Engraving, RWS Tarot, and Blade Runner 2049's moody neon noir.

Sort of. Subtopia is every suburban neighborhood you've known—just warped by imperial ambition, cosmic forces, and forgotten myth. If you've ever walked your dog past a Target and wondered about the stars, you’ve been to Subtopia.

Yes! The Magician card allows you to manipulate tiles or outcomes using “cosmic insight.” Other archetypes include The Planner, The Settler, and The Disruptor. Each has unique abilities and risks.

2 to 6 players. The game is best enjoyed with 3–5 for the full suburban conflict-to-cosmos chaos ratio.

Not at all. If you’ve ever played Settlers of Catan or Carcassonne, you’ll pick it up quickly. And the rich visuals make it easy to stay immersed and strategize.
